Junk Drawer Rescue

We all have that one drawer. The one that's a catch-all for anything without a home—loose batteries, way too many flashlights, a few stray screws, and maybe a fly swatter for good measure. Here's a time-lapse video of how I cleaned out my chaotic drawer. This mini-project only took about 6 minutes from start to finish.

How to Organize a Junk Drawer: A Simple Plan

  1. Empty and Evaluate

First, I took everything out and laid it on the counter. This step allowed me to see everything in the drawer. I started tossing anything that was broken or that hadn't been used in a while.

  2. Categorize and Contain

Then, I sorted the remaining items into logical groups: pens and markers, flashlights and chargers, small tools, and other miscellaneous items. There were six flashlights in the drawer! I used the small wire baskets I already had to create sections within the drawer. Don't feel like you need to buy a fancy new organizer. Use what you have!

  3. Find a Home for Everything Else

Finally, the items that didn't belong in the drawer were relocated to their proper homes.

This drawer may not look perfect, and I know it won’t stay tidy forever. But right now, I can quickly and easily find exactly what I need. Spending just a few minutes organizing a small space like this can create the momentum you need to tackle bigger projects.
